Does it work with hardware that isn't UniFi?

Almost certainly. Anything that can speak 802.1X to a RADIUS server will work, and the values Passbeam gives you — an address, a port, a shared secret — are the same three fields every vendor's form asks for. The walkthroughs are written against UniFi because that is what most people reading this have.

Passbeam offers both transports, so the question is usually not whether your equipment is supported but which of the two it speaks. See “RADIUS or RADSec — which should I use?”.

One caveat worth having in advance, because it is not the caveat people expect. Configuration is rarely the problem; occasionally the *switch* is. We have tested a Netgear GS724Tv4 on its final firmware which accepted a complete and correct RADIUS configuration, ran its 802.1X state machine, reported the port as held — and never sent a single Access-Request. Nothing reached us, so there was nothing to refuse and nothing in the log. Moving the same device, with the same certificate and the same secret, to a UniFi switch worked on the first attempt.

So if a port authenticates nobody, read the switch's own RADIUS statistics before suspecting the certificate or the secret. If its Access-Requests counter is zero, the request never left the building and nothing at our end can help. That check takes a minute and it is the one that would have saved us two hours.
